Red palm weevil treatment in Ibiza

The red palm weevil (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus) is the biggest threat to Ibiza's palms. The problem with this beetle is that it works from the inside: the larvae eat away at the crown for months with nothing visible from outside, and by the time the symptoms are obvious the damage is usually well advanced. That is why acting early is not generic advice but the difference between saving a specimen and having to fell it. At ServiJuanito we diagnose, treat and prevent red palm weevil at villas, hotels and residents' associations across the island, with endotherapy, foliar treatments and pheromone traps, following the phytosanitary regulations of the Conselleria d'Agricultura de Balears. We have looked after palms in Ibiza since 2003, and that experience matters most in early diagnosis: recognising an infestation while it can still be reversed.

    How we work

    1. 01

      Inspection

We check each palm for the early signs: central fronds drooping or notched in a fan pattern, sawdust at the base of the leaves and galleries in the crown.

    2. 02

      Diagnosis

We establish whether there is an active infestation and at what stage, which is what decides whether the specimen can be saved.

    3. 03

      Treatment

Endotherapy and foliar treatment as the case requires, at the frequency the level of infestation demands.

    4. 04

      Containment

Pheromone traps in gardens with several palms, to reduce pest pressure in the surrounding area.

    5. 05

      Follow-up

Regular checks: a treated palm remains exposed for as long as adults are flying in the area.

Frequently asked questions about the red palm weevil

How do I know if my palm has red palm weevil?+

The most common signs are central fronds leaning or collapsing onto the trunk, leaves with fan-shaped notches as they open, damp sawdust in the leaf axils and, in advanced cases, an audible chewing sound near the crown. Any of these warrants an inspection: the earlier it is found, the better the chances of saving the specimen.

Can a palm that is already affected be saved?+

It depends how far it has gone. If the crown or apical meristem is still healthy, treatment has good odds. Once the larva has destroyed that central bud, the palm cannot produce new fronds and no treatment will bring it back. That is why early diagnosis is what really decides the outcome.

What is endotherapy and why do you use it?+

It means injecting the treatment straight into the trunk so that it travels through the inside of the palm. Against spraying it has two advantages in a garden people actually use: it reaches where the larva is, which is precisely the interior, and it avoids dispersing product into the surroundings.

When is the risk of infestation highest?+

In the warm months, when adult flight peaks. That is why pruning is scheduled between November and February: cutting in summer leaves fresh wounds whose scent attracts exactly the adults looking for somewhere to lay.

Is there a legal duty to report a case?+

Yes. In the Balearics, Decreto 4/2016 declares the fight against this pest to be of public interest and sets mandatory phytosanitary measures: detection must be reported to the competent authority and affected plant material handled through authorised channels. We take care of that procedure and of the removal. The Govern's Sanitat Forestal information is also available.

Is there any point treating if my neighbour does not?+

There is, but it works considerably less well. The adult flies significant distances, so an untreated focus nearby keeps the pressure on your palms. In developments and residents' associations, coordinated treatment is far more effective and also works out cheaper per specimen.

    What does treatment cost?+

It is scaled to the number of palms, their height and the level of infestation. Inspection and quotation are free, and we apply a discount for several specimens because a good part of the cost is travel and setting up the height access equipment.

Do you suspect a palm is affected?

Free inspection and quotation across the island. With red palm weevil the window is short: the sooner it is diagnosed, the more options there are to save the specimen.
