What makes a garden in Sant Josep different
Sant Josep is the largest municipality on the island and the most uneven in its conditions. A garden in Cala Jondal, right by the sea, has nothing in common with one on the slopes of sa Talaia, several kilometres away at a different altitude, aspect and soil. Every project starts by measuring those specific conditions rather than applying a single recipe for the municipality.
Along the coastal strip — Cala Jondal, Es Cubells, Cala Tarida — salinity and direct sun dominate, and many plots slope above cliffs. There we work with terraces, dry stone walls and species that bind the ground, as much for erosion control when the autumn rains arrive as for how it looks.
Inland the estates are larger, with existing country trees — olives, carobs, almonds — and often well water rather than a mains supply. That means sizing the system to the flow actually available and adding filtration, because well water carries particles that end up blocking the drippers.
Well water brings a second, less visible problem: salinity from seawater intrusion, common in wells near the southern coast. Water with high conductivity scorches leaves through salt building up in the substrate, even when the volume of irrigation is right. When we detect it, we shift the planting towards tolerant species and schedule occasional leaching cycles to carry the salts below the root zone.
The pine woods are the municipality's other defining feature, and they shape more than you would expect. Pine shade and the acidification caused by falling needles limit what can be planted underneath, and the pine itself competes for water with a shallow, far-reaching root system. Many of these estates also sit on the wildland-urban interface, so maintenance includes keeping the strip around the house clear as a fire-prevention measure.
Frequently asked questions
Why do the leaves scorch when I water enough?+
Usually salinity in the well water from seawater intrusion, common in wells near the southern coast. Water with high conductivity builds salts up in the substrate and scorches the leaf even when the volume of irrigation is right. It is corrected by shifting to tolerant species and scheduling leaching cycles.
Can I plant under the pines?+
With limits. Pine casts shade, acidifies the soil as needles fall and competes for water with a shallow, far-reaching root system. Mediterranean understorey species and shade-tolerant ground cover work; full-sun planting does not.
What should be done with the strip around the house?+
Keep it clear. Many estates in the municipality sit on the wildland-urban interface, so removing dry vegetation and controlling scrub around the house is part of maintenance, not a seasonal extra.
Does the same design work for Cala Jondal and sa Talaia?+
No. Sant Josep is the largest and most uneven municipality on the island: altitude, aspect, soil and water availability all change. Every project starts by measuring those specific conditions rather than applying one recipe.
