What makes a garden in Sant Antoni different
The bay of Sant Antoni faces west, and it shows: direct sun until late in the afternoon and high temperatures on west-facing façades. The plants that work there are not the same as on a north-facing plot a few kilometres away, and copying a planting scheme that does well elsewhere on the island is a common mistake.
That exposure also changes watering times. On a west-facing plot the substrate keeps giving off heat long after sunset, so scheduling irrigation for mid-afternoon wastes much of the water to evaporation. We set the controllers for early morning, when the soil is cooler and plants can take the water up before the heat returns.
Towards Cala Bassa and Cala Conta the ground is more open and windier. Wind dries things out through evaporation far more than people expect: an exposed garden can need twice the water of a sheltered one with identical planting. There, windbreak planting and mulch stop being decorative and become what brings the bill down.
The area also has a lot of seasonally used property and plenty of tourist apartments with communal areas. For those we plan self-sufficient planting and irrigation that can be controlled remotely, so the garden survives the months when nobody is there and looks presentable as soon as the season starts.
San Rafael and Sant Mateu, further inland, follow a different logic. You lose the salt and gain space: large estates, existing country trees and soil with rather more depth. The work there resembles a rural holding more than a coastal garden — pruning olives and carobs, controlling spontaneous growth, firebreak strips around the house — and the water usually comes from a well, with the filtration that entails.
Frequently asked questions
What time should you water on a west-facing plot?+
Early morning. On a west-facing plot the substrate keeps giving off heat long after sunset, so watering mid-afternoon wastes much of it to evaporation. With cool soil the plant takes the water up before the heat returns.
Why does my garden use twice the water of my neighbour's?+
Almost always wind exposure. Towards Cala Bassa and Cala Conta the ground is open and wind dries things out far more than people expect: with identical planting, an exposed garden can need twice the water. Windbreak planting and mulch are what bring the bill down.
How do I keep a tourist apartment presentable when it is closed half the year?+
With self-sufficient planting and irrigation controlled from a phone. The aim is not a spectacular garden in August but one that survives the empty months and looks presentable as soon as the season starts, with a tidy-up visit before opening.
Is the work different in San Rafael and Sant Mateu?+
Quite. Inland you lose the salt and gain space: large estates, existing country trees and well water. The work resembles a rural holding — pruning olives and carobs, controlling spontaneous growth, a firebreak strip around the house — more than a coastal garden.
«Les pedi que me arreglasen el jardin y que me plantaran cesped, el resultado final fue perfecto y estoy muy contento, agradezco el trabajo y no dudaria en volverlos a contratar.»
