How many plants do I need for a small Mediterranean garden?
Fewer than most people think. On a plot of 200-300 m², three or four species repeated in masses work better than fifteen different ones: the garden reads as more ordered, irrigation sectors cleanly and maintenance stops being a list of exceptions. Variety comes from habit and staggered flowering, not from the number of species.
When is the best time to plant in Ibiza?
October to March. Autumn planting gives the roots the whole winter and spring to establish before the first summer, which is the real test. A May planting reaches the following August with its root system half formed and needs twice the water to survive.
Do these plants cope near the sea?
It depends on the distance. On the front line, with constant salt, mastic, oleander, dwarf fan palm, bougainvillea and tamarisk work. Species like lavender or rosemary do perfectly well a few hundred metres inland but scorch in direct salt-laden breeze.
