    The challenge

Bringing back a traditional garden on a payesa estate with arid soil and degraded planting, keeping the rustic Ibicenco character while cutting water use as far as possible — a critical resource in the south of the island.

    Respect for payesa architecture

Payesa houses are the soul of rural Ibiza. Any work on their gardens must respect the restraint of the whitewashed volumes, the sabina-beamed porches, the wells and the dry stone walls. For this project in San José we took the traditional gardens of the Ibicenco countryside as our reference: little lawn, plenty of shade, productive species and an organic layout that follows the natural topography.

We restored the existing dry stone walls using traditional techniques, without mortar, and created a new terrace bed for a herb garden. Paving was resolved with local gravel and natural stone slabs, avoiding any industrial material.

Mediterranean planting with low water use

The south of Ibiza is the driest part of the island. That is why we favoured species suited to the climate: olives, carobs, figs, almonds, sabinas, rosemary, thyme, lavender and succulents such as agaves and aloes. The whole plant palette is native or naturalised and, once established, needs minimal watering.

We added a small kitchen-garden corner with culinary herbs and a bed of nectar-rich plants to support biodiversity. The result is a living, productive garden deeply in keeping with its payés surroundings.

Rain Bird drip irrigation and water savings

We installed a self-compensating Rain Bird drip system with a Wi-Fi controller and a rain sensor. The system is organised into independent sectors for trees, aromatics and the kitchen garden, so flow rates and frequencies can be tuned to each area's needs.

Thanks to the combination of native species and programmed drip irrigation, water consumption fell by more than 60% compared with the previous system, without affecting plant health.

    Frequently asked questions

Can a payesa house garden be restored without losing its traditional character?+

Yes, and it is how we normally work on payesa estates. We keep the dry stone walls, the porches, the wells and the centuries-old trees, and choose native Ibicenco planting so the work sits naturally alongside the traditional architecture.

How much water does a garden of native plants save?+

Combining native planting (olive, carob, rosemary, lavender, sabina) with a Rain Bird drip system, the saving against a conventional garden with lawn can exceed 60% a year, especially in the south of Ibiza where summer drought is severe.

Do you rebuild traditional Ibicenco dry stone walls?+

Yes. We restore and build dry stone walls using traditional techniques, without mortar, using local stone. It is craft work we carry out regularly on payesa estates in San José, Santa Eulalia and other rural parts of Ibiza.

How long does a payés garden restoration take?+

An average full garden restoration at a payesa house takes between 4 and 8 weeks on site, depending on the area and the scope. After handover we offer a regular maintenance plan to make sure the planting establishes properly.
